Imagine working with your incoming freshman before their 8th grade summer begins. Plan to do more than a tour! Made up of a series of visits and events, this process will ease anxiety, squelch myths, and build a confident expectation in your incoming class. 

Mentees-to-be learn from your experienced role models! Teach them how to combat personal fears, establish academic habits for a successful first year, and make choices now that will  impact their pathway to graduation.

Step 1: Get prepared

The first step is to select an equity-based team of mentors and run a kick off training on the importance of spring transitions. 

Timing is everything! Allow your mentors to impact your 8th graders before their magical summer begins.

Step 2: Get organized 

Prepare for 3 separate visits for 3 different lessons

Lesson 1: "Looking Ahead"

- Lesson 2: "Looking at the Learner"

- Lesson 3: "Looking Towards Success"

Mentors can work with counselors to help with registration


 This mentor is facilitating an activity to help ease fears of the incoming 8th graders. Peers ask about the myths and rumors they heard about their school. The upperclass mentors do an excellent job providing clarity, comfort, and encouragement.

day of transition is when they come to visit you! 

This day is designed to get your incoming students excited about attending your school and meeting their yearlong role models.

A half day event led by your team of transitions mentors, your incoming students will experience an assembly, breakouts on clubs and activities, academic goal setting, meet and greet 9th grade teachers, and a school tour. 

Let your team of student mentors be the voice that leads the day and sets the tone for the expectations of your school.

orientation by student design

As day 2 of mentor summer training, your team will get prepared on how to run your fall orientation. Training also includes accessing our online dual-learning system to help them feel confident facilitating their assigned breakout.

This day is purposefully designed to build relationships between your upper-classmen, teachers, and freshman.Topics include academic success, goal setting, focus on social influences, commitment, and making healthy choices for the first month of school. 

Establishing positive relationships helps them connect with their year long role models. Mentors can work with counselors to help with registration, schedules, and help with school photos!
